Welcome to Ebola & Diet, a special project of Planetary Health, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization devoted to creating a peaceful, sustainable future. We offer information and guidelines on how a balanced natural foods diet can strengthen natural immunity to disease and may help prevent infection by the Ebola virus. It may also help persons infected with Ebola recover.

Contaminated food, especially bushmeat (virus-infected wild monkey, bats, and other native animal food), is a recognized risk factor in the spread of Ebola in Africa. But unsustainable modern agricultural practices and the unhealthy modern food pattern (high in meat, poultry, dairy, excessive fat and oil, white flour, white rice, sugar, GMOs, chemically grown food, and other refined, highly processed, or artificial food) are also important, widely unrecognized factors in why many people are susceptible to the virus and why others, who eat in a more balanced, natural way, have strong natural immunity to infection.
Natural and organic farming practices, a healthful macrobiotic, vegan, or largely plant-based diet, and natural remedies—in concert with the international medical relief effort—could be an essential part of the solution to Ebola and other emerging viral diseases. Such an agricultural and dietary approach is centered on whole grains, beans, vegetables, and sea vegetables with a modest amount of fruit, seeds and nuts, natural sweeteners, and other supplementary foods. It also includes natural seasonings, condiments, garnishes, and pickles; sugar- and dairy-free snacks and desserts; as well as spring, well, or filtered water and traditional teas and other beverages. < Umeboshi, a traditional salted, aged, sour plum, is an integral part of a macrobiotic and natural way of eating and has traditionally been used to strengthen the blood and lymph, boost natural resistance to infection, and treat diarrhea (all major symptoms of Ebola). Researchers at Wakayama Medical University in Japan reported that an extract from umeboshi can suppress the growth of the H1N1 virus associated with the recent Swine Flu epidemic. The growth of the virus was suppressed after consuming 5 small pieces of plum by nearly 90% after 7 hours. ("Umeboshi Have H1N1 Suppressent," Japan Times, June 3, 2010.)
